Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to treat uterine fibroids and adenomyosis, both of which can cause heavy menstrual bleeding and other symptoms.
During the UAE procedure, a small catheter is inserted into an artery in the groin and guided to the uterine artery, which supplies blood to the uterus. Small particles are then injected through the catheter to block the blood flow to the fibroids or adenomyotic uterus, causing it to shrink and die. The procedure is usually done under local anesthesia and takes about an hour.
UAE is a safe and effective alternative to surgery for many women with uterine fibroids or adenomyosis. It can provide relief from heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and other symptoms, and it does not require a hospital stay or lengthy recovery period as compared to traditional surgery of hysterectomy which required removal of the uterus.
The biggest advantage of Uterine fibroid embolisation is that itcan preserve the uterus of the patient and not cause any scarring or harm to the uterus. The patient does not need to undergo any major surgery. Procedure can be done on a daycare basis and patient can return to routine activities within 2-3 days.
